Experiencing Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a spectacular gem nestled in the southwest region of the south island. This sound was carved by glacier during the ice ages. It is about 16 km from head to sea offering breathtaking views of exceptional waterfalls, cliffs, and mountains like the iconic Mitre Peak. As the only fiord that can accessed by road there are a few options to experience its exceptional scenery. You can take a cruise, a kayak tour, or a scenic flight.

In our opinion the best way to experience Milford Sound is a cruise. We have done the kayaking, the great walk, and scenic flights. The value and views on a cruise far exceeds the other options. We did a 2 hour boat cruise with free coffee and tea on a smaller boat offered by Mitre Peak for $40 NZ a person. On this cruise we got to see and travel the length of the fiord to the open ocean past the lighthouse. We got to get up close and under the Amazing Stirling Falls. We saw seals and got right up to the cliff edges to see the sun and water make a rainbow on the cliff side. It was the perfect way to experience the sound.

You might say but adventurous people would go sea kayaking. We did the kayaking in the sound and it only allowed us to experience and see a fraction of the16 Km sound. We did not realize the grandeur and  full scale beauty of the sound until we did the cruise. There are countless places to kayak in New Zealand in our opinion sea kayaking here does not deliver the truly spectacular scenery.

New Zealand’s most popular Great Walk is the Milford Track. The backpacking track only offer a quick glimpse of Milford Sound on the last day as you are transported on a quick 15 minute boat ride from Sandfly Point to Milford Sound. Here you can grab a view of the sounds beauty but it does not do it justice. The Milford Track is not the way to experience Milford Sound.

Many people visit the Sound on a day trip from Te Anau or Queenstown. If you can book a room or camper van spot at the Milford Sound Lodge. It is 5 minutes from the sound and allows you to get access to amazing cruise deals from bookme.co.nz. We stayed there in our camper van  for 1 night. They have large fully equipped kitchen to cook in and a great common room to hang out. The showers and bathrooms were large, clean, and private. A great place to base your Milford Sound Adventure.

As a visitor to Milford Sound you will not be disappointed – it is truly spectacular place to experience.
