If you are looking to do some camping while visiting Mammoth Lakes, CA. I would suggest Sherwin Creek Campground. It is located just a few miles from town and down a very accessible road. The road is pavement and hard pack, wide with hardly any grade.
It is a nice wooded campground offering shade from the hot sun with vault toilets and level sites. Potable water is also available.
Fee: $22 / night

*** Bears are very active in this area and the town of Mammoth Lakes in general. We had a mom and 3 cubs come into camp 2 nights in a row. The bears know where people are there is food. Use the bear boxes and lock your cars. bears are very smart and can open a car door. Also HIDE your coolers. Bears know that a cooler equals food and will break windows to get to those highly prized containers. Even if the cooler is empty put a blanket over it etc. The bear won’t know it’s empty until it has broken your window and ransacked your vehicle. All the bears in this area are Black Bears even though they might be brown or reddish. They are generally easily scared off, however in the case of a mom with cubs be extremely careful as the mom will protect the cubs.
Two of the Three bear Cubs. Why Yes, that is a red tent in the background.
